Chaldon Path, the walkway connecting Beverstone Road to Nutfield Road (Google map view), has two large planters at the Beverstone Road end. These were placed back in 2016 at THCAT’s request, with the aim of bringing greenery to the space. For a while, they were looked after, but over time, they have fallen into disrepair—often becoming dumping grounds for bottles, cans, bags, and even discarded clothing.
Now, Croydon Council has suggested removing the planters entirely. But is this the right solution? THCAT believes in greening spaces like this and wants to hear from the local community:
- Should the planters stay or go?
- Are there local residents who would be willing to help maintain them—keeping them tidy, weeding, watering, and replanting when needed?
We won’t sugar-coat it—this will require time, effort, and possibly some financial support. THCAT will fund the initial replanting and arrange a clear-up session with council support. But for the planters to remain long-term, we need committed people to take ownership of their upkeep.
There has been a positive response so far, with some generous offers of plant donations and help with watering. However, we still need a dedicated group to maintain them regularly, especially to cover watering when people are away and to arrange replacement plants when needed.
Could you be the local hero who takes the lead? Or do you know someone who might?
As a little inspiration, planters at the entrance to Norbury Park are thriving (see main pic)—surely, we can do the same here in Thornton Heath!
